MICHAEL DOLAN was born and educated in Dundee. Following studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, he joined the Scottish National Orchestra and also played both violin and viola in string quartets and Baroque chamber groups. In 1978 he was appointed Assistant Leader of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Following an invitation to join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he moved to London, where he also freelanced widely in studio and film work as well as chamber ensembles. He was appointed co-principal second violin of the RPO in 1992, a position he held until 2013.
Michael was a founder member of the RPO’s innovative and highly regarded outreach and education programme, and continues to work in mainstream and special schools across all ages. He particularly enjoys working with young string players and has coached county music orchestras throughout England.
In July 2015 Michael and his wife moved to Suffolk to enjoy the many pleasures of the county, including working with its fine local musicians. Michael was appointed leader of Prometheus Orchestra in 2016.
